We are back at one of our favorite haunts, the Farmers Market on Fairfax. We will be meeting either in the East Patio, or if it is cold, in the indoor seating areas just upstairs from there. The stairs leading to the seating area are on the North side of the patio.

Call 818-804-5049 if you need help locating us the evening of the event.

Here are a few photos from our most recent LA Friday Coffee held at the Farmers Market at 3rd and Fairfax. This historical location is always a big hit with folks and we ended up with a nice-sized crowd for the evening. We ended up staying a little later than usual with a short walk through The Grove and some book shopping at Barnes and Noble.

LA Friday Coffee was off to the LA County Museum of Art to catch the last days of the exhibit, Olmec: Colossal Masterworks of Ancient Mexico. It was a small, yet amazing exhibit including 2 colossal head sculptures that epitomize the Olmec arts. I felt the exhibit was just the right size. You didn’t feel the need to dash from exhibit to exhibit, but could take your time to enjoy each piece and spend a few minutes contemplating the culture that created them.

I also took 3 panorama pictures with the 360 Panorama iPhone app to give you a feeling of the overall gallery. Click to see each full size.

Meet between the ticket booth and lampposts at the main entrance and then we will hit one of the coffee carts for a little sustenance before hitting the exhibit. If you are coming later, call 818-804-5049 to find out where we are. Most likely we will be in the Olmec exhibit after 7pm, though.

Here is the information on the Olmec exhibit from the LACMA.ORG web site…

Olmec civilization, which began sometime around 1400 BC, was centered in the Gulf Coast states of Veracruz and Tabasco. Olmec architects and artists produced the earliest monumental structures and sculptures in Mexico, including enormous basalt portrait heads of their rulers. The colossal sculptures in the exhibition weigh between 7 and 10 tons each.

The exhibition also includes small-scale jadeite objects that embody the symbolism of sacred and secular authority among the Olmec. Olmec artists were unsurpassed in their ability to work with this extremely hard stone, using elementary tools like chert, water and sand.

Olmec: Colossal Masterworks of Ancient Mexico, is co-organized by Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia, LACMA, and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and is curated at LACMA by Virginia Fields, senior curator of Arts of the Ancient Americas. The exhibition at LACMA will be the first presentation on the West Coast of the colossal works and precious small-scale sculptures produced by Mexico’s earliest civilization.
